Use Castlewellan Forest Park, Tollymore Forest Park and Kilbroney Park as three day plans around a confirmed campsite booking in County Down, Northern Ireland. This is an editorial road-touring suggestion, not an official route or a list of places that automatically accept roof tents.

Choose one campsite for two nights if that suits your travel connections. Arrange the days around its location, opening and movement rules, rather than treating the order below as compulsory. The route and overnight-stop planner helps turn these destinations into a practical trip.

No fixed mileage is given. Measure the complete route using the roads you select, the campsite and any return to base. If travelling from Great Britain, include the crossing and its check-in requirements when deciding whether three days in the region are realistic.

Day one: Castlewellan and a manageable arrival

NI Direct's Castlewellan page identifies the Annesley Garden and Arboretum, the Peace Maze and waymarked walking trails among the visitor options. Pick one focus for the day instead of treating every activity as part of the itinerary. Check the current operator information for opening and access before deciding what suits the group.

The same page says Newry, Mourne and Down District Council manages recreation, camping and caravanning at Castlewellan. Use the booking and contact route it identifies for the current arrangements. Do not apply another forest park's campsite rules to this one simply because both have forest in their name.

If the journey uses most of arrival day, go straight to the campsite and move the visit. For a new tent, allow time to practise its opening and closing routine before adding a second destination. Use your first roof-tent weekend to prepare that part of the break.

Day two: Tollymore and an appropriate trail

NI Direct's Tollymore page describes waymarked circular trails starting from the information board in the main car park, with routes of different lengths. It includes the Arboretum Path and longer river and mountain options, and recommends strong footwear.

Read the current trail description and map before choosing. This itinerary does not turn the longest route into a default outing, or assess a mountain walk for your experience and conditions. Choose the activity around the group, forecast and available daylight, and check notices on arrival.

Keep the day flexible enough to shorten an outing and return to the campsite within its access arrangements. A paid park visit and a campsite reservation are separate things; confirm which entrance and parking area apply to the activity you have booked or chosen.

Day three: Kilbroney Park at Rostrevor

Use the council tourism page for Kilbroney Park to check current facilities, opening and notices. It locates the park on Shore Road at Rostrevor, off the A2 between Newry and Kilkeel. Save the operator's approach information before travelling rather than relying on a destination name alone.

Select a park activity from the current information and leave time for departure. Walking, cycling and vehicle access need their own appropriate routes; an activity map is not permission to drive a forest track. If a section or facility is unavailable, use another confirmed option rather than improvising access.

On a departure day, pack the roof tent and check out according to the campsite's conditions before making the final visit. Include the actual journey home or crossing time in your decision about how long to stay.

Confirm a roof-tent pitch before booking

Ask the campsite to confirm a car with a roof-mounted tent, not just a generic tent or touring vehicle. Give the open tent dimensions, ladder footprint, closed vehicle height and any awning details. Ask which booking category and area apply to that complete setup.

Castlewellan's NI Direct page distinguishes its main touring area from the grass camping area and states that tents cannot be booked on the main site. That does not decide how the operator classifies a roof tent. Resolve the category directly before paying, including the surface, ladder space and whether any accessory is permitted.

The Tollymore booking page lists tents and several touring accommodation types, but does not name roof tents in that list. Use the official booking route and ask Forest Service to confirm the suitable category for your setup. This guide makes no roof-tent acceptance claim for Tollymore, Castlewellan or Kilbroney.

Read the rules for the site you choose

NI Direct's forest campsite rules identify the Forest Service sites to which they apply, including Tollymore. Read them for a proposed stay there. For council or independent accommodation, obtain that operator's own current rules instead.

Confirm arrival, departure, gate and vehicle-movement arrangements with the booking. If you intend to drive out during the stay, explain that the tent travels on the car. Use the campsite booking checklist to record the answers and keep a confirmed alternative if the original arrangement changes.

Access, roads and parking

The Northern Ireland Countryside Code explains that most land is private and access depends on the owner's goodwill and tolerance. It also asks visitors to respect access wishes and park considerately. Do not apply Scottish access-rights guidance to this itinerary.

Use TrafficWatchNI, the Department for Infrastructure service, to check road information before the trip and near departure. Follow current restrictions and the campsite's recommended approach. This page does not confirm the status of individual roads or parking spaces on your travel date.

Before a crossing or a restricted entrance, use the height calculator to organise the loaded dimensions and confirm the final measurement. Save the booking, site rules and approach offline alongside the vehicle's equipment instructions.

Check with the source: these references were checked on 22 October 2026. Refresh park notices, travel information and overnight acceptance before travelling; a route suggestion does not establish current permission or availability.
